Suta Sarees: Woven with Love

Suta Sarees: Woven with Love

I remember the first time I wore a saree. It was my 'farewell' day at school (I'm sure many can relate). Instead of buying a brand new saree for the special day, I borrowed one from my aunt. It was a gorgeous silk piece with shades of plum, and I was beyond excited to wear it. Of course, it took an army to drape the damn thing, but I loved the result. It's funny how beautiful a piece of garment can make you feel.

Sarees are an integral part of our culture and customs. From traditional to modern, from classic to fusion, the Indian market has a lot to offer when it comes to sarees. For some, (like yours truly), sarees are reserved for special occasions; a fun way to jazz things up, as they say. For others, they stir up a sense of nostalgia. They are the reminders of the bygone era, the lost past, the buried memories.

Su + Ta: Sisters turned Business Partners

The memories of their grandmother and the love for sarees is what brought sisters Sujata and Taniya Biswas together. Su and Ta joined forces to build Suta : a brand of organically-made sarees. (Fun fact: the word 'suta' also means 'thread'.)

One conversation with the weavers of West Bengal and their hearts were set. After witnessing the process of saree making, the duo left their comfortable corporate lives and began their journey into the world of textiles.

With little to no experience in the eCommerce business, their journey was not without difficulties. As the saying goes, "What doesn't kill you makes you stronger", Su and Ta tackled each obstacle with grace and love. What kept them going? The answer is simple: the desire to make a difference. Suta's primary goal is to empower the weaver communities across India. The search for the right everything led them to the farthest corners of the country. Safe to say, their hard work paid off.

An Ode to Traditions

For Suta, every product is unique in its own way. Each garment takes weeks of dedicated work and craftsmanship and is an ode to centuries-old traditions.

Draping a saree is not an easy feat (especially for amateurs like myself). With Suta, you will not need that box of safety pins. They offer a wide selection of sarees, dresses, and blouses “dipped in love”. From 90's Flower Dreams to Neele Gagan ke Tale to Rangeen Shehr, each collection is curated to invoke a special feeling. Their collection Raga (inspired by Hindustani Classical music), consists of beautiful linen and zari pieces and is a must-see.

That’s the way, saree way...

Quitting a well-paying job to follow your passion is not as easy as it may sound. It takes immense courage, belief and determination. From a two-women party to a team of twenty, they have come a long way. If you are looking for unique designs with handmade fabrics that will make your "souls sing with joy"- Suta is the place to be.
